Video game adaptations have historically struggled, but recent hits like The Super Mario Bros Movie, The Last of Us, and Arcane demonstrate their potential success when backed by the right creative teams. Warner Brothers and Mojang have seen multiple shifts in direction for their Minecraft unblocked movie since its announcement in 2014, with several directors coming and going. Now, with a confirmed director, a star-studded cast, and a set release date, the long-awaited Minecraft film seems to be finally taking shape.

Release Date

The Minecraft movie has experienced numerous delays, initially slated for May 24, 2019, under Rob McElhenney’s direction. After his departure, Peter Sollett’s version was scheduled for March 4, 2022, but was eventually removed from the release calendar. Warner Bros has now announced a new release date: April 4, 2025. Fans are hopeful that this date will stick.

Theatrical Release

The Minecraft movie is planned for an exclusive theatrical release in April 2025. While it will likely make its way to streaming services eventually, it is expected to have a theatrical run first. Warner Bros’ streaming service, Max, is a probable destination for the film after its time in theaters.

Current Status

With Jared Hess directing and Jason Momoa leading the cast, the Minecraft film appears to be on a stable path. The project is generating excitement, and fans are eager for more updates as the release date approaches.

Trailer

No trailers or promotional materials have been released yet, which is understandable given the film’s release is still two years away.

Cast

Jason Momoa was announced as the star in April 2022. Joining him are Danielle Brooks as Dawn and Sebastian Eugene Hansen as Henry, revealed in November 2023. Emma Myers joined the cast in December 2023. In January 2024, Jack Black was rumored to be playing Steve, the iconic player avatar from the game. Other notable cast members include Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement. Steve Carell was initially attached to the project in 2016 but is no longer involved.

Plot Details

Details about the plot are sparse. Various iterations of the script have existed, with one version focusing on a teenage girl and her group of adventurers saving the Overworld from an Ender Dragon. The game itself is an open-world building and survival game, featuring iconic locations like The Nether and The End, and enemies such as Creepers and Endermen. These elements are likely to be featured in the film.

Production Team

Jared Hess, known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, is directing. The production team includes notable names such as Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Vu Bui, and the late Jill Messick.

The movie has seen numerous changes behind the scenes. Initially, Shawn Levy was set to direct with a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, but they departed in 2014 due to creative differences. Rob McElhenney and Jason Fuchs later took over, focusing on player agency within a digital world. However, this version was shelved following a change in studio leadership. Adam and Aaron Nee, followed by Peter Sollett and Allison Schroeder, also contributed to the script over the years.

Filming

Originally set to begin in New Zealand in August 2023, filming was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023. Production eventually commenced in January 2024 and wrapped in April 2024, as shared by Jason Momoa on Instagram.

The Minecraft movie has had a tumultuous journey, but with a solid team in place and production complete, anticipation is high for its 2025 release.
