Who is eligible for a Blue Badge?

You’re automatically eligible to apply for a Blue Badge if you:

  • are registered as blind
  • carer for a blind child aged over 2
  • higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • get War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • received a lump sum payment as Armed Forces Compensation scheme

If you’re not automatically eligible

You are eligible for a badge under the following conditions:

  • If you experience persistent challenges with mobility or accessing locations, whether due to physical ailments or mental health concerns, you qualify.
  • If you encounter severe difficulties utilizing both arms, you are eligible for a badge.

In the case of applying for a child:

  • Children aged over 2 who face long-term challenges walking or accessing places due to stress, anxiety, or other mental health issues are eligible.
  • Children under 3 who require close proximity to a vehicle due to a health condition are also eligible for a badge.

How to Apply for a Blue Badge

You can apply for a blue bade online by visiting GOV.UK. Some of the ouncil member will also let you apply offline by visitng the local council.

Documents you will need

Before you apply, make sure you have:

  •  (if applying for a child) – National Insurance number or child reference number
  • (If already own one) – the number,  local council and expiry date on current blue badge,

You’ll also need:

  • The initial decision letter issued by the Department for Work and Pensions, applicable if you’re automatically entitled to a badge.
  • Information regarding your medical condition if automatic eligibility for a badge does not apply.
  • Valid proof of identification such as a birth or marriage certificate, passport, or driver’s license.
  • Documentation confirming your address from the past 12 months, like a council tax bill, driver’s license, or correspondence from a government entity.
  • A current digital photograph of the individual intended to use the badge, sourced from a personal device, a photo booth, or a store.

If you’re applying by post

You will have to send document copies instead of originals, in case the mails gets lost. Also you need to have a copy of indentification proof checked by a professional like solicitor.

What happens after you’ve applied

Sometimes application takes a lng time to process. You may have to contact the council if you do not get any response within 6-8 weeks. You might be adkes to do the mobility assessement.
